This is the Coffee House Wall for this week. I won’t say that it is your chance to communicate with us, as we are all in this together. It is, nevertheless, the Conservative Blog post that has no particular theme, and where everything is on topic. Let’s just remember that we want to avoid ad hominem attacks on others. We don’t want to engage with trolls. We want to moderate our language ourselves as responsible and mature adults, choosing to use fruity language only where it is necessary. This is our opportunity to show what the Spectator Coffee House Wall could have been like.

    While we have CMD vowing to clear the classrooms of ‘Islamism’, we have concerned parents improving standards within their school – in line with Government policy:

    “However, Mr Khan has maintained that his desire to remove head teachers was to improve standards, and said he was not seeking to ‘Islamise’ schools.”

    So, what happens to all those schools that are following the multi-culti policy and letting communities have more influence within the schools?

    Democracy rules, and Local Democracy rules even more locally.

  9. There was a knock on the door a minute ago. I thought it was my son coming home from playing his guitar at my parent’s studio. But it was a tired looking man who introduced himself as someone from the Labour Party. I told him, sorry mate, UKIP all the way! He looked even more tired, as though he had heard it many times before, and sloped off into the dusk.

I believe that many here, whilst not being EDL are far from anti what this group believes in. Can you point out specific postings where Tommy Robinson “was kicked around”?

    Baron’s take on it, too, Peter. In his constituency, it’s unlikely the Tories’ choice could be beaten. Nevertheless, Baron will vote Ukip in May, and unless the Tories drop the boy, choose someone with some common sense, he will do the same when the national count comes next year.

  44. Interesting… I was called upon to take my 14 year old son and some his friends back to school with their band equipment, they are taking part in a concert. In the car they were talking about halal meat and Pizza Express serving it to all their customers without any notice. It seems significant that a bunch of 14 year old boys should be discussing it and considering it rather scandalous.

    Nothing strange , she enjoyed it.
    We had a stunning girl in Colchester who was about 14 , she had every celeb who was on at the regal.
    Door staff let her in and out all the time , there was no secret about it.
    They were very different attitudes to these things in the late 60s early 70s.
    I knew her husband later on and she was freinds with lots of people I knew.
    This is just a statement of those days, I make no moral judgement .

    We had a clear view of right and wrong in those days. A situation occurred where a group of us lads heard a friend of ours getting a bit too carried away with his girlfriend . She started yelling no, but it seemed not to be stopping him.
    We just went in , grabbed him and took him outside to cool off.
    Said sorry for him to the girl and it was sorted.
    We had great respect for girls in those days. We didn’t need to be told.
    But girls who put it about like those we are talking about were beyond our assistance.

    Robert I agree, the RSPB was one of four charities that I have paid annual or quarterly direct debits to for almost fifty years but not now, I stopped payment late last year what with their contribution to the flooding problem and as you say windmills, the idiots are even building windmills on some of their bird sanctuaries.

    When I stopped their debit with my bank they advised me to contact the RSPB to ensure no further debits, the woman who I spoke to; when asked told me that they have had a deluge of cancelations.

    But what finally sent my blood pressure sky high was when that pretty newsreader who fronts the ‘Antiques roadshow’ said as if to clarify what in her opinion was not a problem that at the point of slaughter ‘A prayer was said in Arabic’ it might well be said in Arabic but the point is IT IS A MUSLIM PRAYER and this is a Christian/secular country, we are not all down on our knees kissing the backside of the man in front five times a day.

    Kosher meat is not stunned prior to slaughter and Jewish dietary laws are quite complex in what can and what cannot be eaten.

    I have eaten kosher food many times in the past and would be happy to eat it in the future and though limited in what can be classed as kosher all is to a very high quality, I find all kosher bread to be delightful.

    Your comment ‘as long as they are stunned who cares?’ shows a lack of understanding of the issue, and that you are mistaken in thinking nobody cares, millions care because they do not wish to eat food that has been offered in prayer to a strange foreign deity and halal meat has not been stunned.

    All halal meat is slaughtered without any form of stunning and at the point of slaughter a Muslim incantation is supposed to be offered up to the Muslim deity, I write supposed because I doubt very much that with a thousand chickens to slaughter the man with the knife repeats his incantation a thousand times.

    Much of our revulsion to eating halal meat stems from an intrinsic dislike and distrust of a primitive credos that by its very nature sets its face against a reformation to bring it into the 21st century.

    Consider this, the Arab world translates about 330 books annually, one fifth of the number that Greece translates. The cumulative total of translated books since the Caliph MaaÕmounÕs time (the ninth century) is about 100,000, almost the average that Spain translates in one year.

On a serious note, too many carers are unqualified, nursing staff are not registered nurses, and being in a care home is often an end-of-life punishment for the inmates. Seen too many neglected elderly people and ‘carers’ who cannot speak or understand English properly.

    could you offer care 24/7, no days off. Coping with toileting at 3am. making sure they dont fall. cooking, feeding. making sure they have enough fluids.
    do you think its safe just you helping them move. if they are very frail you need 2 people.
    do you have a hoist for when they cant safely move from chair to bed or wheel chair to an chair. etc. are you trained to use one safely.
    can you cope when they are offensive, or dont do as asked. remember you cant forget it at the end of your shift like carers do.

    I know our instinct is to care for our loved ones ourselves. But as they become very frail, I am afraid that becomes impossible, and we must leave it to the people who know how to do it.

    believe me I have had to do some heart searching about this but I am sure I am doing the right thing.

    My father in law is in a care home and we are very happy with the care that he is receiving. When we turn up, nearly always unannounced, the staff always know where he is. They organise activities, the place is clean, and they ensure he is drinking and eating enough. It is amazing how dehydration makes so many problems worse, as well as being a problem in its own right. At least, now, he sees people during the day and there is someone available at night (who can sleep through the day).
    Sometimes it is impossible to care for an elderly relative. They may need hardly any care, but this ‘hardly any care’ may be 24*7 and, without sleep, the day job becomes impossible. Just having their bedroom door close to the stairs can be major danger if they are a bit wobbly at night.

I came from a large family which cared for its own. Quite a lot of the women did not work outside the home, and our old grandparents were at the heart of the family.
