This is the Coffee House Wall for this week. I won’t say that it is your chance to communicate with us, as we are all in this together. It is, nevertheless, the Conservative Blog post that has no particular theme, and where everything is on topic. Let’s just remember that we want to avoid ad hominem attacks on others. We don’t want to engage with trolls. We want to moderate our language ourselves as responsible and mature adults, choosing to use fruity language only where it is necessary. This is our opportunity to show what the Spectator Coffee House Wall could have been like.

    But I say to the Yanks bring on the Hillary candidacy. No Democrat is more beatable. She’s gonna spend a year selling her non-existant record of achievement and trying to deflect unanswered questions about Benghazi, emails, murky fundraising, Travelgate, etc, etc…

    My own particular favorite are the Hillary tapes where she laughs about getting the rapist of a 12 year old girl off with two months.

    See? I really was a police writer. Maybe the world’s ugliest. I’m not making it up.

    I sometimes wish that people knew more about cops, who they are, and the world they live in. There are pretty good cops (most) and very bad ones (few) but accounts in the press usually bear little relation to the truth. What happens on the streets is not as clear, not nearly as clear, as the immaculately coifed indignations of the flickering screen would have you think. Permit me a few examples of routine ambiguity.

    First, though, a journalistically unwelcome reality: Almost everyone charged by the police is guitly, no matter what Jesse Jackson thinks. There are two reasons. First, the perps are almost all caught in the act: They are swerving all over the road and blow museum-pickled on the Alka-Sensor, or caught coming out the window with the TV set, or the car is reported stolen and they are driving it, or caught slinging rock and it’s in their possession. Second, the case load is so great in the cities that the DA won’t paper a case unless he is sure he will win. The cops know this, and know the DA will raise hell with them if they send him iffy-maybe-could-be cases, so they don’t.

    Cops engage in, and have to engage in, a lot of Not Quite by the Rules policing (NQBTR). Sometimes the rules just don’t quite work. For example, the aging widow in DC who didn’t sell in time when the neighborhood went bad and drug dealers started hanging on her corner. Property values died and she can’t sell for enough to buy elsewhere, and she is afraid to leave to walk to the grocery store past a cloud of dirtballs. The cops tell the dealers, “Get your sorry butts off this corner, now, and don’t come back.”

    It isn’t legal, but the druggies don’t know it. Or maybe they do, but know better than to push their luck. They move to another corner, the old woman gets her groceries, and everybody is happy. Got a better answer? I don’t.

    A modus vivendi often exists between the cops and the street life. One of the federal buildings in Washington, I forget which but maybe SEC, overhangs a tiled walkway, protecting it from the rain. I’ve seen a dozen grocery carts there on a wet night, each containing some homeless bozo’s life. The owners (almost owners, anyway: the carts were liberated from Safeway) slept on mats and, if they were gone early, the cops left them alone. And why not?

    That was pre-9/11. Things may be different now.

    The city is full of crazies, and the police have to deal with them. One night in an almost middle-class region of the city, the cop I was with got a call about a rapist in some woman’s home. The officer said he would look into it but didn’t seem much interested. That was odd, I thought. Anything “in progress” usually gets instant attention. Was this guy cold-blooded, or what? We casually drove to the location.

    She turned out to be one of the head cases released to the streets years before to save the city money, a paranoid schizophrenic obsessed with being raped. She lived in a nice house paid for by the city. We went in. The walls were covered with obscene scrawled admonitions, “Stop putting your…” etc. The officer said a friendly “Hello, Mrs. Smith, where is he? Back there? Let me check it out.”

    He went into the back part of the house for a minute or so, returned, and said, “He’s gone, you’ll be all right.” She thanked him, and we left. In a few days she would call about another imaginary rapist, and he would do the same thing.

    Real-life policing. Got a better idea?

    Chicago, the Austin district, I think, a bad neighborhood and under-policed. I was riding with a plain-clothes guy in an unmarked car. An old jalopy swerved dangerously in front of us. We stopped it.

    Two old black guys, probably in their sixties and clearly drunk. License and registration please. Well, see, officer, I left my wallet etc, and I borrowed the car from a friend, I guess the registration is at, and I didn’t know the license plates were different, etc.

    Their story was likely true, or close enough. The cop knew that old black guys don’t steal cars. This is called “experience” or, in the media, “profiling.” The cop also knew that if he took them in, the magistrate would let them go on recognizance because the available cells were full, give them a court date, which they wouldn’t keep, and the next day they would be drunk again. They weren’t criminals and didn’t need to be in jail. On the other hand, the driver was drunk at the moment and dangerous. Solution?

    He locked their car keys in the trunk of their car, figuring the two would be approximately sober by the time they figured out how to retrieve them. They would be driving smashed again the next day anyway but not for a few hours. We left.

    Got a better idea?

    DC, summer night, walking a foot-beat in empty streets. We encountered a blonde woman, forty-fiveish, crawling on the sidewalk in cruddy jeans. She was sick drunk, incoherent, barely able to stand, with the grey-vegetable look that comes of living on gin and Vienna sausages. She protectively clutched a bottle as if it were her child, obviously terrified that the cop would take it away—as he should have. Technically should have.

    Technically, he should have taken her in for public drunkenness. But why? There was nowhere to put her. Cells are few and usually full of people who ought to be in them. The city can’t afford to send endless alkies to Betty Ford. The next night would be the same thing. She would die of liver failure no matter what we did.

    We watched as she crawled on all threes, clutching the butte in her free hand, into an alley. We went on our way.

    Got a better idea?

    In a suburb in Prince George’s County, the drug-and-gang situation had gotten so bad that mothers were afraid to walk their kids in strollers. It was ugly. The question had become who was going to control the streets. Somebody up the power ladder decided that enough was enough.

    A massive police presence followed. I went with the cops. Police cars parked everywhere. When a couple of bangers congregated on a corner, a cop stood two feet way, looking at them. If they walked down the sidewalk, he walked five feet behind. This is not optimal for selling crack. A civil-rights lawyer would have called it police harassment. It was. It was intended to be. It probably wasn’t legal.

    Maybe two weeks later, I saw women pushing strollers along the sidewalk. No bangers. They had just moved to another region to do the same thing.

  19. Labour are proposing to extend the vote to 16-17 year olds. Of course when such potential voters run off to join Jihadi John they are called “children” incapable of exercising self determination and not responsible for their actions. When they vote Labour – or Green – that’s another matter.

    We should not be surprised at this apparent contradiction. Women, who already have the vote, are now considered to be equal to men in all aspects of life but somehow are still considered to be ‘vulnerable’.

    Comparing an out of work and homeless Army veteran suffering from PTSD and unable to grasp an identity, narrative or future with, say, Harriet Harmon or Hillary Clinton, I wonder which could truly be described as ‘vulnerable’?

    Labour’s politics of discrimination and prejudice, the pecking order established by their constructed identity groupings, is truly vile.

Their “manifesto” is pure comedy script, their “leader” appears to have escaped from a mental home, and their policies, which need a magic money tree to become reality, only fit for toilet paper. However, as David has said, it is Labour that will lose votes to them, the Tory/UKIP voters have far more sense.

  28. Wih all the talk about the forthcoming Election, I would like to raise a rather mundane subject. Actually there may be something sinister in my question – why have weighing machines vanished from chemist shops, train platforms and other public places? Are the powers that be afraid that if on weighing themselves, some of the public may be so upset that they have gained weight that they will top themselves? This would then raise the issue of damages, suppose the machine wasn’t accurate and the suicide victim believed he/she was obese. Could the family claim that the weighing machine was the cause of death and demand damages?…….

    ‘Not Ordinary Yorkshire Lads as we know them Jim’

    According to an article in the Guardian, two ‘ordinary Yorkshire lads’ went on holiday to Turkey, from whence they travelled on to Syria, presumably to join ISIS. Their names were Hassan Munshi and Talha Asmal. What is ordinary in Yorkshire has evidently changed out of all recognition in my lifetime. In my day, ordinary Yorkshire lads didn’t go to Turkey, let alone to Syria, no doubt to the benefit of both.

    The elder brother of one of the ordinary Yorkshire lads, Hassan Munshi, was another ordinary Yorkshire lad called Hammad, who, as it happened, was the youngest person ever to be convicted of terrorism in Britain. Apparently he conspired to murder non-Muslims: and you can’t get more ordinary than that.

    The use of the term ‘ordinary Yorkshire lads’ put me in mind of a mother whom I once heard on the wireless describe her 16 year-old son, just convicted for his 250th burglary, as ‘a good boy really.’ She must have been using the words in a severely technical sense. The real boy, as against the merely apparent boy, wouldn’t harm a fly, and actually had a very strong sense of meum and tuum.

    According the parents of the two ordinary lads, Hassan and Talha had promising futures. But terrorism is supposed to be the inevitable product of an unjust world, of lives so desperate, impoverished and blighted by injustice that there is no future for them, isn’t it? Obviously the parents have not been reading the Guardian attentively; they have let the side down by their ill-judged statement.

    It was a relief, however, to know that the police were carrying out their main duties promptly and assiduously: ‘West Yorkshire police said they had been supporting the missing teenagers’ families…’ Only then did we learn that they were performing their auxiliary duties such as ‘carrying out extensive enquiries alongside the north-east counter-terrorism unit.’

    The main function of the police nowadays is to express their sympathy for the victims of the crimes they know they are not going to solve. As they put it, ‘Our thoughts today are with…’ Police spokesmen, or persons, sound like Church of England clergymen without the upper-middle class diction. They are particularly moved by senseless murder, sensible murder moving them to much less compassion; and of course there are the robberies or burglaries that go tragically wrong and end in the deaths of the persons who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. My advice to readers is always to be in the right place at the right time.

    Ft. Huachuca – 20 miles from Mexican border, 30 miles from Nogales Rex ’84 facility.

Jerome – Chicot/Drew Counties – site of WWII Japanese camps Rohwer – Descha County – site of WWII Japanese camps Blythville AFB – Closed airbase now being used as camp. New wooden barracks have been constructed at this location. Classic decorations – guard towers, barbed wire, high fences. Berryville – FEMA facility located east of Eureka Springs off Hwy. 62. Omaha – Northeast of Berryville near Missouri state line, on Hwy 65 south of old wood processing plant. Possible crematory facility.

    CALIFORNIA
    Vandenburg AFB – Rex 84 facility, located near Lompoc & Santa Maria. Internment facility is located near the oceanside, close to Space Launch Complex #6, also called “Slick Six”. The launch site has had “a flawless failure record” and is rarely used. Norton AFB – (closed base) now staffed with UN according to some sources. Tule Lake – area of “wildlife refuge”, accessible by unpaved road, just inside Modoc County. Fort Ord – Closed in 1994, this facility is now an urban warfare training center for US and foreign troops, and may have some “P.O.W. – C.I.” enclosures.     Halawa Heights area – Crematory facility located in hills above city. Area is marked as a state department of health laboratory. Barbers Point NAS – There are several military areas that could be equipped for detention / deportation. Honolulu – Detention transfer facility at the Honolulu airport similar in construction to the one in.Oklahoma (pentagon-shaped building where airplanes can taxi up to).

    Minidoka/Jerome Counties – WWII Japanese-American internment facility possibly under renovation.     Marseilles – Located on the Illinois River off Interstate 80 on Hwy 6. It is a relatively small facility with a cap of 1400 prisoners. Though it is small it is designed like prison facilities with barred windows, but the real smoking gun is the presence of military vehicles. Being located on the Illinois River it is possible that prisoners will be brought in by water as well as by road and air. This facility is approximately 75 miles west of Chicago. National Guard training area nearby. Scott AFB – Barbed wire prisoner enclosure reported to exist just off-base. More info needed, as another facility on-base is beieved to exist. Pekin – This Federal satellite prison camp is also on the Illinois River, just south of Peoria. It supplements the federal penitentiary in Marion, which is equipped to handle additional population outside on the grounds. Chanute AFB – Rantoul, near Champaign/Urbana – This closed base had WWII – era barracks that were condemned and torn down, but the medical facility was upgraded and additional fencing put up in the area. More info needed. Marion – Federal Penitentiary and satellite prison camp inside Crab Orchard Nat’l Wildlife Refuge. Manned, staffed, populated fully. Greenfield – Two federal correctional “satellite prison camps” serving Marion – populated as above. Shawnee National Forest – Pope County – This area has seen heavy traffic of foreign military equipment and troops via Illinois Central Railroad, which runs through the area. Suspected location is unknown, but may be close to Vienna and Shawnee correctional centers, located 6 mi. west of Dixon Springs. Savanna Army Depot – NW area of state on Mississippi River. Lincoln, Sheridan, Menard, Pontiac, Galesburg – State prison facilities equipped for major expansion and close or adjacent to highways & railroad tracks. Kankakee – Abandoned industrial area on west side of town (Rt.17 & Main) designated as FEMA detention site. Equipped with water tower, incinerator, a small train yard behind it and the rear of the facility is surrounded by barbed wire facing inwards.

    INDIANA
    Indianapolis / Marion County – Amtrak railcar repair facility (closed); controversial site of a major alleged detention / processing center. Although some sources state that this site is a “red herring”, photographic and video evidence suggests otherwise. This large facility contains large 3-4 inch gas mains to large furnaces (crematoria??), helicopter landing pads, railheads for prisoners, Red/Blue/Green zones for classifying/processing incoming personnel, one-way turnstiles, barracks, towers, high fences with razor wire, etc. Personnel with government clearance who are friendly to the patriot movement took a guided tour of the facility to confirm this site. This site is located next to a closed refrigeration plant facility. Ft. Benjamin Harrison – Located in the northeast part of Indianapolis, this base has been decomissioned from “active” use but portions are still ideally converted to hold detainees. Helicopter landing areas still exist for prisoners to be brought in by air, land & rail. Crown Point – Across street from county jail, former hospital. One wing presently being used for county work-release program, 80% of facility still unused. Possible FEMA detention center or holding facility. Camp Atterbury – Facility is converted to hold prisoners and boasts two active compounds presently configured for minumum security detainees. Located just west of Interstate 65 near Edinburgh, south of Indianapolis. Terre Haute – Federal Correctional Institution, Satellite prison camp and death facility. Equipped with crematoria reported to have a capacity of 3,000 people a day. FEMA designated facility located here. Fort Wayne – This city located in Northeast Indiana has a FEMA designated detention facility, accessible by air, road and nearby rail. Kingsbury – This “closed” military base is adjacent to a state fish & wildlife preserve. Part of the base is converted to an industrial park, but the southern portion of this property is still used. It is bordered on the south by railroad, and is staffed with some foreign-speaking UN troops. A local police officer who was hunting and camping close to the base in the game preserve was accosted, roughed up, and warned by the English-speaking unit commander to stay away from the area. It was suggested to the officer that the welfare of his family would depend on his “silence”. Located just southeast of LaPorte. Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area – Youth Corrections farm located here. Facility is “closed”, but is still staffed and being “renovated”. Total capacity unknown. Grissom AFB – This closed airbase still handles a lot of traffic, and has a “state-owned” prison compound on the southern part of the facility.

    Hard to disagree with the substance of the argument except that the barbarian believes the expansion east is very much in American long term interest whether Russia is or isn’t a failing country.

    Russia has the largest reserves of fossil fuels, up north, the Yanks want an access to it because their own reserves of oil, oil sands, shale gas and oil will run out within 15-20 years. The Middle East, as a region, may yet implode, and anyway doesn’t have as much of the stuff as Russia.

    Given that the Republic (in population terms less than 5% of the world’s 7bn) consumes around 20% of world primary energy the US needs to secure the reserves of Russia if not directly (near impossible task) than via a Kremlin Government friendly to them. The change in policy towards Russia the writer of the piece advocates doesn’t suit America’s geo-political aims of securing access to still the most reliable source of energy, it will not be even considered by either political party in Washington.

    And the Czech guy will be toast soon. If he doesn’t drop because of his liking of the bottle, the ever inventive American democracy promoters will find a way of getting rid of him.

    That is all tripe before we even plumb the grisly depths of what might constitute ‘progressive politics’ and by whose definition.

    Any politician who campaigns to get rid of another party as a primary objective should be regarded with deep suspicion. Sturgeon repeated this mantra too often, at one point asserting that “the purpose of this election is to get rid of the Tories”. No, it isn’t, and by hate mongering like that she insults all those British people who might wish to vote for the Tories, as is their democratic right, within a pluralist political system.

    There was a previous national socialist who also believed in “getting rid” of those political parties which opposed him. A “heart of gold”? Don’t think so. Rather a very dangerous demagogue.

    Also, she was attempting to usurp the right to govern. As the leader of a geographically constrained nationalist party she has absolutely no right to call on anyone to “get rid” of the government of the whole United Kingdom. It is not for Nicola Sturgeon to disregard the wishes and votes of the people of England. But the fact that she was able to do this is an indictment of the constitutional mess and threats to the political stability of this country caused by Labour’s crass and unbalanced devolution policies and which in Scotland have hoisted them on their own petard.

    It is a clever ploy to self-describe parties as “progressive”, focussing on a fairly limited range of aspirations, usually tied to grievance, in order to claim a moral high ground and to attempt to de-legitimise dissent, ignoring the reality of consequences. It is little more than claiming “We are right about everything and no-one has the right to dispute that”. The opposite of “progressive” – the opposition to that – is “regressive” –

    1. Tending to return or revert to a previous state.
    2. Characterized by regression or a tendency to regress.
    3. Relating to or being a tax that amounts to a higher percentage of income as income decreases or that places a proportionately higher burden on lower-income taxpayers.

    which are pejorative definitions that cannot honestly be applied to conservative or right wing politics. As usual with socialists the whole thing is a sly and manipulative deceit intended to invoke absolutism and a quasi-religious morality.

    No wonder the Labour party can so easily reconcile itself to the contradictions posed by radical Islam. They have so much in common in the way they attempt to impose their supremacy.

    The old man of 92 has a point except he fails to understand the Republic’s political elites have to have another cold war, or any other disturbance that weakens the possible contenders for world’s hegemony whilst theirs is on the wane.

    Take the Yemen’s conflict as an example. The country’s domestic squabble gets blown up, the Saudis are sucked in, the religious friction in the region rises … and for what? The desire of the Americans to have a pro-US government in the country, a government that would say yes to the US military’s setting up a base on the island of Socotra, in the jurisdiction of Yemen, close to the Gulf of Aden (google it). They’ve asked for it before, failed to secure permission. Alot of Chinese goods (30%) passes there on route to Europe through the Suez Canal. The base will be strategically important when the neo-cons decide to turn their attention to the Mandarin speakers.

As far as we know, none of the other Christians retaliated, only resisting further loss of life.
