Well, has Cable finally gone too far? Is there anything that he could do or say which would be so bad that Cameron would have to insist on him leaving Government? Is this it? And if he gets away with this then surely he will be reasonably able to conclude that he can get away with anything.
Not content with being a pain in the side of the Conservative element of the Coalition, he now seems to be preparing for an in your face assault on the elasticity of the Coalition. This time the issue is over the appointment of the head of the higher education regulator. Cable wants to appoint a man who is manifestly opposed to Government policy, while the Common’s Business Select Committee, senior Conservatives, and even university heads believe he is the wrong man.
James Clappison, a Conservative MP and former education spokesman has said,
I find it very disturbing that a Secretary of State is choosing to ignore the views of a select committee of Parliament.
But surely Cable has been ignoring everyone for the extent of his tenure as Business Secretary. If he continues to act against the will of the Prime Minister, the Select Committee, a large proportion of the MPs in the Coalition he serves in, and even against the opinions of the heads of Universities, then has he gone too far this time. If there is a straight battle of wills between Cameron and Cable then can Cameron afford to lose, dare he blink first, and will Clegg sacrifice the Coalition and his only chance at the Government high-life for the sake of Cable, a man he must always dread appearing in public.
So what? Cable defies No 10. No 10 defies the voters … latest ruse – forcing women onto company boards. Cameron curries favour with Merkel and Sarkozy. What’s new?
The sooner Britain is rid of this ramshackle, directionless mess, the better.
I see the Taliban has some advice for Prince Harry. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/theroyalfamily/9072102/Prince-Harry-in-Afghanistan-use-Royal-role-to-help-people-not-kill-say-Taliban.html
And how should our brave British prince of the blood “help people”? Perhaps the Taliban was mistaking him for his mother, Princess Diana. My own feeling is, the British should be scraping the Taliban off the sole of the shoe of human kid. That includes women and children.
Is there any way of correcting a typo? I meant to write “human kind”, not “human kid”, as included women and children in the following sentence.
It is high time for him to stop causing trouble; it is becoming a weekly if not daily event that some LibDem or other flaunts the wishes of the cabinet, get in line or resign should be the rule.
Has David Cameron actually stood up for anything yet? I mean anything really important? I can’t think of anything though I am willing to be corrected. I know there was the great ‘veto’ of the EU treaty, but he now appears to have nodded through whatever the EU wanted in any case.
So what has he actually said no to that really mattered?
I see that Cameron called Cable and told him to back off over this appointment. I am not at all convinced we need anyone to fill this position in any case, but it clearly should not be a person who opposes the Government policy.
There is a report coming out this week which will also criticise Ebdon being put forward as the candidate.
Hopefully he will be out of the post soon enough. He is old. His seat has been abolished in the boundary review. And like it not some of the gloss has come off him now he is in government. We Brits can’t stand a whinger and the Lib Dems are pursuing the insane strategy of seeming to hate government. Perhaps Cameron is trying a death by a thousand cuts approach, although that might be wishful thinking.
